Why Hasn't Anyone Part Swapped A McLaren?

Okay Oppo everyone knows the 570s reviews are just coming out, and we all know once again it has the 3.8L twin turbo charged V-8, same as the 12c, 650s, 675lt, and P1. Now I know that these engines share basic architecture and not every single part, but why hasn’t anyone put P1 components in a lower level McLaren? I want someone to make a 570s and change the components in the engine to give it the 727hp. It couldn’t be too hard to change out all the parts, right? Sure it may be a $40-50k aftermarket option, but if your car costs $150k and then you pay $50k to put you into $500k+ performance territory that seems worth it to me. Or even if you paid $5-10k and moved the power up to 650s territory, you’ll still be lighter, and smaller, for much less money. These are just my random thoughts of today after seeing a few more 570s videos!

I talked to a guy once that ordered an slr engine for his sl55 and threw enough money at it that the shop made it work perfectly, shortly after that Mercedes changed their procurement policy so that you had to have an slr vin to get slr parts. Something tells me mclaren isn’t keen on letting you swap thing around like that

I’m not sure if autozone has the parts for this years model yet though.

exactly my thought too. it would probably be too hard to swap over all the hybrid parts onto the none hybrid car.

Go watch some more YouTube. There are plenty of vids of modified McLarens about.

Your idea on how much parts for high end cars actually cost is a bit off. For example, if the head is different, a simple head swap on something like a Mustang might cost you $3,000 - $5,000, on something like a McLaren, you would be closer to the realm of $30,000 - $40,000.

I know this to be true as the muffler on my Ferrari cost $5,200. That’s not a full exhaust system, that’s literally the muffler.

Then you just need friend with an SLR, or find a VIN of one for sale online.

Well, according to a neighbor friend of my folks (who owns an SLR) its a little more complicated than that. If you go into a merc dealer asking for any SLR parts beyond wiper blades, they are going to get VERY nosey.

The 570S is pretty much brand new.

Why would anyone buy a brand new entry-level 570S and throw a bunch of extra money at it to upgrade it, when they could instead buy a brand new 650S? They’re not going to add the hybrid system from the P1, so why not get the higher-performance car that McLaren already sells? An aftermarket-upgraded 570S is not going to be much cheaper than a 650S, if at all.

Maybe in several years if used 570Ses end up much cheaper than the cars with which they share an architecture, more people will use the 570S as a cheaper McLaren entry point. But not while the 570S is so new.

Good luck finding the OEM parts. And the amount of P1s out there tell me the aftermarket support is close to zero. Or if you do a one-off then the cost of R&D would probably already get you into P1 territory so you might as well get the real deal for that cost.
